| no partners | | Part of the Arizona Trail. Actually hiked from Marshall Lake to Walnut Canyon Trailhead. Combined the Marshall Lake to Fisher Point hike and then part of the Equestrian Bypass 87 hike from Fisher Point to Walnut Canyon Trailhead. The rest of the Equestrian 87 Bypass from the Walnut Canyon TH to I-40 is all road so unless you are hiking the AZ Trail, there really isn't much point to hiking it.
Arizona Outdoor Travel Club (AOTC) Hike led by the legendary leader Don Mowry & co-led by Bev. Two Groups from opposite ends with a Key Swap at Fisher Point.
This is a great moderate dayhike. Emmitt Barks on his Flagstaff Map shows the distance from Marshall Lake to Fisher point as 6.7 miles and from Fisher point to the Walnut Canyon TH as 6.4 miles. We took a small excursion to look at the small cave under Fisher point and I did some exploration around Fisher point while the group was relaxing so my mileage is a little higher.
This hike is easier from south to north. Coming from North to South, the climb out of Walnut Canyon is a little tougher. Flagstaff area had received significant rain. Trail was muddy to start but dried up quickly. Monsoons threatened but held off. Thunder in the distance was unnerving but no lightning. You can hear the trains in the distance when you are on the Equestrian Bypass 87 trail. Two mountain bikers on the trail in Walnut Canyon, they had come in from the Sandy Canyons TH.
Lunch afterward at Beaver Street Brewery. Monsoons hit with a vengeance when we were at the restaurant. |
