Lots less traffic than I-10 to I-15 south, or I-10 to Hwy 85 to Gila Bend, then I-8. Also, much less boring than I-8. CA-78 has the additional double advantage of driving through the huge sand dunes east of Brawley ( http://youtu.be/S3jVudKKokE ) and eating apple pie in Julian.
Culinary highlights in Julian: Lunch at Bailey Wood Pit BBQ was tips (my wife) and pulled pork (me), accompanied by Julian Brewing Co. Belgian Ale. It was delicious. As was desert at Apple Alley, which a subsequent survey of Yelp and Google reviews reveals is the best apple pie in apple pie-famous Julian.
What was not delicious was breakfast at the Wendys in Ehrenberg. Despite not being delicious, at least I was able to get biscuits & gravy, which is increasingly rare as truck stops rent their space to meatloaf & gravy-less mega food corps, rather than running their own diners. It's a sad day when your only truck stop choices are Taco Hell and Burger Queen. |
