| no partners | | After the hike the night before, I got all excited about all these new northern region mcdowell preserve trails - - and despite rain I decided to head out to get the segment GPS to post. Brad took the kids to church while I was in fast hike mode.
First attempt was at 8:30am - parking lot was amazingly full on the equestrian side with 6 or 7 trailers. The other parking lot also about 30% full - mostly bikers. In my eagerness I did not really assess the weather condition - and so I sat in my car about 20 minutes as a heavy downpour ensued. I tried to get the satellite radar on my phone but wouldn't pull up. Clouds looked unrelenting as far as I could see south so I went home.
Got home, was aggravated at myself and the situation - now it's not raining - can see on home computer that there's no heavy rain for another hour or two. So I go BACK to the trail head with two layers of rain gear - now parking lot is completely empty. I've got too much pride and stubbornness to go home now. I layer up and with my umbrella hiked the segment end to end. I did not like the feeling of hiking alone with basically no one else out of the trail. Maybe because I'm a girl or something - gives me little pit in my stomach and lots of looking around - even though it's freakin' north scottsdale and no one cares about me or is waiting on the trail to do anything weird. But still . . . between the echoing of the rain drops hitting the umbrella with my hood covering my ears - and the loud smash of the sandy trail slogging along - I think my heart rate was maximally elevated the entire time.
Was actually lovely to hike in such cool weather and the rain was just spitting and not bad at all. Wish my daughter was old enough to drag her along for any length of hike....maybe soon. Got home and uploaded the GPS route and for-heavens-sake the darn thing didn't record any data points. Empty GPS route. Quite the fitting end to my morning of false starts and rain and nerves. I was all embarrassed about the morning when I talked to my husband around lunch - and he said that this exactly is why he married me (so sweet! ) b/c there aren't many people who like to hike this much. There actually are plenty - but I'm glad he thinks it's rare! |
