The first part of the hike is open to the public, but it changes over to McDowell Sonoran Preserve land, and you either go with the MSC on a guided hike or you purchase a preserve access pass. Elevation is around 2800 feet and the trail has minimal elevation change if your destination is the old ranch. Trail is very sandy. We saw some motorcross people and several bikers and joggers.
You circle around Brown Mountain and end up at the "ruins" of the Brown's ranch (1916 - 1950's). The cattle overgrazed (5000 head for 46,000 acres), and a revegitation project with native grasses has been somewhat successful. Near the footprints of the main house are rock shelters and base camps that date to archaic peoples time.
The walk back to Alma School rd parking has a nice view of Pinnacle peak. Temperature in the low 80's after rains the last few days made this little hike quite pleasant. The MSC guides brought historic photos of the ranch and knew lots of the history and geology, etc. of the area. |
