Had planned for a date hike tonight, but babysitter canceled at the last minute. So we brought the kids with us, and turned out to be a super fun evening. We hiked to Brown's Ranch ruins in 2007, but this was our first time hiking from the new swanky trail head. I had no idea there were so many little trails off the main Brown's Ranch Road trail that was there back in 2007. Tons of them - all interlocking - mostly flat and sandy. Great for trail running or biking. Little nature trail loop planned too.

Today we took Brown's Ranch Rd trail to Brown's Mountain Trail to the peak and back same route. Highlight of this hike (and maybe of my whole summer) was seeing a BABY desert tortoise on the trail about mid way up to Brown's mountain peak. Cute little thing - see You Tube video below. Kids went crazy with excitement over it. George asked where his Mommy was and could he pick it up. We watched him/her move speedily across the trail and hide in a some brush. Might never again in my life see 2 1/2 inch desert tortoise!

When we were 0.3 from the peak, the trail was too loose and slippery for Brad to make it with George on his back. So they stayed behind at the scenic overlook, and just Caroline and I went to the top. She is one tough little hiker : app : - in 90 degree heat and direct sun - but she made it up that mountain and was so proud at the top! She took a little pleasure in the fact that George couldn't get to the top but she could. And that probably no one else in her PreK class has ever hiked to the top of this mountain (most likely true).

Love the views as you climb to the top of Brown's mountain. The rock types towards the top are fascinating. Lots of lichen with all the recent rains. We topped off the evening at Greasewood Flat with drinks, dinner, dancing. What a night!! My kind of Saturday.
