This Big Tooth Maple and Quaking Aspen pocket at 7725 feet elevation was a very pleasant surprise find. The previous day Oregon Hiker and I were driving back up FR321 from the completion of our afternoon Yeager Canyon loop hike on our way back to camp. About 1.4 miles prior-to reaching the Rim Road(FR300), we happened to glance-over to this inner forest area and noticed a continuing colors "glow" as we continued driving. I was able to get a fix on the approximate entrance road location, but was not sure what actual canyon or draw drainage area this was nor when an available time would be to confirm or deny a possible new prime area for Autumn viewing.
Today fortunately we completed our previously planned morning "West Bear Canyon" loop hike early which gave me the needed extra time to drive back over on FR321 to check-out this section. This new area turned-out to be excellent for Autumn color viewing (about 5-7 days from prime) and very family friendly hiking with simple off-trail and route finding down this Bill McClintock Draw (Upper) drainage section.
I concluded this area was worthy of a new HAZ Hike Description for all future Mogollon Rim prime Autumn color hunts (for all those driving Rim Road FR300 between FR398, FR321, and FR137). |
