| partners | | This was "Sierra Ancha Wilderness" new exploration area Rock-In  day hike number 3 of 4 for our planned vehicle camping / hiking trip 5/15 to 5/20 (5nts/6days).
I had been interested in exploring up this fairly hidden and scenic-deep canyon drainage which was off Rim Trail #139 for its upper access .. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=342093 and off now decommissioned Coon Creek Trail #254 for its lower access .. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=292502 .
In mid October, 2012, I completed quite a bit of GPS Route planning for a proposed bushwhack that would hopefully take Oregon Hiker and myself up this impressive canyon drainage from the lower access route off Coon Creek via Trail #254. On 10/24/12 Larry and I gave it a good effort and actually got pretty far in and up, but unfortunately we needed to abort our hike due to safety/risk concerns (for us older guys) and time constrains. We made it in and up far enough to see and know that we soon needed to regroup and come up with a new access route that would hopefully allow us to clearly see the upper reaches of this most intriguing and deep "unnamed" canyon drainage with its numerous cliff alcoves and caves.
This 5/18/13 exploration hike was our successful second attempt and we will hopefully be back again to see and explore for more..  (a now available new hike description for this one along with our geocoded picsets with detail captions/tag notes, and the "official" recommended GPS Route with key WPs tells the rest of the interesting story which will hopefully entice others interested and qualified to also consider planning a visit). |
