| no partners | | I wanted to get down into the area during fall colors again, but this time actually do the hike up to Gate 2 versus just staying down in Garden Canyon. Had to go for Thursday as it would be a nice day between storms. Paul joined me, since both of us had only hiked it once before back in November 2002. It was fun seeing how much we remembered about it...turns out not a lot other than it was steep!
What a beautiful dark shaded canyon it is. Can't believe I waited so long to return, but that is due to it being on Fort Huachuca. It is more of a scramble than a trail in places and obviously doesn't see much traffic (probably more bears than hikers). Sort of difficult to follow in places, especially in the steep switchback section up near the top where it is covered with leaves and pine needles. We originally were going to make a loop out of it by coming back down Sawmill Trail, but decided against that with all the time burned taking pictures and route finding. That turned out to be the right call.
Following the hike we stopped at La Casita Restaurant and Cantina in Sierra Vista for some good Mexican food and a beer. |
