| no partners | | I wanted to see what was left of the fall colors in the lower part of this canyon before the big storm rolled in to usher in the winter season. I knew this would be worthy from the trip that Jack and I did in August. Trees past prime as expected, but still plenty of color aloft and on the ground. Wildlife was abundant today, and the critters were foraging with a purpose, likely aware of the coming changes. Started out with a nice visit with the Nature Conservancy staff, then it was out the backdoor to enter the wonderland. Such a great place! Totally took my time soaking in the beauty and watching the gathering storm clouds racing across the ridges above. From the viewpoint I dropped down to the canyon bottom again a little further on and explored a little off trail along the creek. Delightful. On the way back I ran into a fair number of folks who were heading to the overlook or doing the loops on the preserve. One person I talked with extensively told me she lives in Bisbee (the killer bee honey folks there) and I mentioned that years ago I introduced a couple of my friends to Bisbee (1974 or 1975) back about the time the mines were shutting down and the place was being increasingly inhabited by hippies (she exclaimed that yep, hippies, that was her Mom! ). This of course was happening in old mining camps throughout the West in those days. Anyway, when I mentioned the name of my friend that ended up moving there within a year of seeing it (August Schaefer), she jumped up and down and said that August was a teacher of hers way back when there was an alternative school being run there for awhile. Anyway, I asked her if August (who was also involved in poetry groups) was still living there, as I had lost contact with her ages ago. She said yes, so I asked her to say hello for me. That was the topper on a really fine day in the Huachucas!
Okay, let it rain and snow now! |
