| no partners | | I wanted to get in some distance and some elevation gain without going too far from home. So I cheated and did Mount Ord from Slate Creek. Actually I don't mind this one at all and even kind of enjoy it. The access from my house is less than an hour usually however today was IronMan day so it slowed things south of Fountain Hills on the Beeline.
All was going perfect and at about 5.5 miles into the hike I see smoke. I look a little closer and what the heck!?! The ground is smoldering next to the road and there is a big burned area. First thing I think is that someone threw out a cigarette and it started a fire. So naturally I go down the side to where the smoke is and start stomping it out. I keep doing this and am not having much luck as the leaves are a couple inches thick. Then I hear a car coming down the road. I run up towards the road waving my arms. Stop, stop I yell. They do and I ask if they have any water in the vehicle? The guys says a couple small water bottles but that is it. I explain that I am trying to put this fire out and could use some help! He says it is a prescribed burn and that I will see much more of the same as I continue on up the mountain. Okay now I feel like a complete idiot.
The rest of the way up was indeed a bit smoky. Oh well my intentions were good. |
