| no partners | | My wife is in the Netherlands, so I decided a few weeks ago to celebrate Christmas on top of Picketpost. I even bought some decorations to take up with me. I received a few small stockings, so I took those as well. The walk up was not bad until I came to a rather steep little wall about 1.5 miles into the hike. I started up, but did not feel comfortable, so went back. It looked like the wash to the south (right) of the trail might be an option, and not too dense, so I got in the wash and started up. It cliffed out (upwards) pretty quick. It sure would make an awesome cascade if water were flowing though. So, I setup my holiday festival, opened my stockings and drank my Barking Squirrel Lager. (Barking spiders I have heard of, but never a barking squirrel.) Afterward the celebration was over, I decided to avoid totally wussing out, I would descend the wash north of the trail. The slope was grassy and not steep, but I ran into another small cliff. So, instead, I settled for cutting across some spurs into Alamo Canyon. Found a Land Survey Marker on the way, which was a nice surprise as it is not on the topo. I headed south in Alamo Canyon until the first intersection with the AZT, whereupon I turned around and headed back to the trailhead.
I exercised (the most important thing) and found a few cool things, so it was a good day. I'd like to go back to the summit, just with a guide who has been there before. Volunteers?
