| After he finished thoroughly scrubbing the curb with his front air dam (he hates dirty curbs), BobP hopped in and we were off. Within seconds his new shirt set off one of the four Geiger counters I keep in my truck (I made a mental note to check the other three), and I knew it was going to be a great day.
We arrived a few minutes late (sorry), had a few intros and followed the group toward Stewarts eastern notch. For the most part Bob and I stayed in the bouldered drainage, but on the way up to Stewart the various groups and subgroups kinda went every which way. Eventually we congregated on Stewart to kibitz and unpacked the goodies. Champagne, sparkling cider, Pam's delicious chocolate-covered strawberries and homemade cookies were passed around as we took in the great 360 degree views and took on the grueling work of signing registers, taking pictures, and unearthing a survey marker.
Fortified, we once again broke off and headed in various directions, with Joe Bartels, Bob and I heading for the microwave reflector and the southeast peak. We copped a seat on the summit and opened the last bottle for summit toast deux, reveling on how far we were from the brown cloud.
From there we dropped to the saddle and up the northeast peak to finish the bubbly and talk further about really interesting hikey stuff.
Finally, it was time to head down, with Bob pulling away on the steep east face leading back to Chez Shulhauser, where we enjoyed peach beer, hot dogs, and incredibly large pieces of onions.
A great day - Pam's Vulture Peak Event was my first HAZ group outing, and with this year behind me, I'm amazed at how many great people I've met in 12 months. I even had the pleasure of finally meeting and hiking with the one-and-only Teva Joe after only 11 years! |
