|What a genius move to call this mountain Polaris....after all its close to the North Star mine.
We camped in an old mining camp with lots off rusty stuff and broken glass and cholla . The plan was to look at the map in the morning and plot our route. Instead of doing that we checked out the mine and headed up from there. The mine area is really cool with an old bunkhouse and mining stuff and old stuff and concrete and heavy stuff. After checking out the stuff we headed up.
We eventually hit the old hand built trail and before long we were at the old tent foundation below High Henry mine. From here it was up and some more up and cholla and traverse and then the saddle . The saddle to the peak was more enjoyable. The peak had stellar views of this awesome area. We enjoyed the summit and had a beverage and lunch. I kept hearing noises that sounded like dogs or coyote but never saw them. When chums came up, we later heard a voice and we figured it was a mountain lion hunt. We never did see them though. Chums went down the peak a little to a lookout and later I followed. He later discovered a rattler and I went back to check it out.
The trip back was a little easier and I headed over to the canyon below High Henry mine and found an old wheel and trailer thingy. We stayed on the trail most of the way back and then headed towards the truck. I saw a mining claim with an inscription on a rock. Next, I stumble upon another mining campsite with a rock foundation for something..tents? We decided that Kofa Butte will have to wait for a future trip. What a great weekend in a rugged remote regal area. Thanks Chums it was frickin awesome.
And now for a song.
His name is Chumley, he is Norwegian
With dreams of becoming a weatherman
He wears flipflops and bright colored t-shirts
And likes to hike and drink at bars
He drives a Taco and laughs at cars
The desert floor is his playground
Always there with phone in hand.
At the Kofa (KO!) KoFacabana
The hottest spot northwest of Marana
At the KoFa (KO!) KoFacabana
Beer flowing freely and calfs were a flexin
At the Kofa.... we hiked a lot.
My name is BobP
I am the old guy
With dreams of younger days
But mostly through a purple haze
Now I'm hiking instead of running
Its not work its really fun
Sleepin sometimes in the sun
Happy just to be alive.
Hair was black but not no more.
At the Kofa... they hiked a lot.
But that was a several days ago,
When we weren’t moving very slow
Now calfs are sore and do not glow
Still in bright t-shirts and dressed to kill,
Time to swallow another pill
Try to stand but fall in pain
Hoping for a monster rain
Cannot flush this from my brain.
At the Kofa... you’ll love this place.
