| partners | | The Wally mobile picked me up and we were off to Happy Valley to meet the others. All I knew about this trip was … that it was overnight and we were doing Tanner-Escalante-New Hence. I didn't know how much aeg or the mileage but I did know that Tanner leads to Escalante Butte and Cardenas and I’ve wanted to do those.
First off, thanks to Dave for setting this up and getting the permits. I know what a pain it can be to get a group together and setup shuttles, meet up times, and everything else. It was a great trip and I enjoyed it immensely.
The trip down Tanner is pretty steep especially with a backpack. Fast forward to about 1:30pm and the guys have been waiting for me for about 45 minutes and have told anybody who’d listen that I needed to hurry up. We hit the Beamer turnoff and then the river. Preston let me try out his sawyer pump which I liked but I don’t think I’ll buy one. Next up was a great campsite and dinner.
The next day, the highlights were the Unkar S, 75 mile canyon, and the upper reaches on Hance.
75 mile was my favorite part of the day. Going up Red Canyon, I made two mistakes. First I took the left split which cost me .1 miles each way and then where it crosses the unnamed canyon directly below Moran point. I ended up following the unnamed canyon for .25 miles and it was pretty cool but it was a half mile and about 300aeg that I didn’t need to do. After that, I started to pay attention a little more. The upper portion of Hance was really nice but at that point I was in I want to get this house of my back mode.
If you ever get a chance to hike with Bruce, Wally, Denny, Preston, or Dave consider yourself lucky. They are really great guys. |
