High atop Mount Lemmon, the first two miles of the Crystal Spring trail is well-maintained, fairly level and parallels the mountainside, winding in and out of stream beds. Crystal Spring is about 1.5 miles in. From the Spring, the trail goes through the Bullock Fire area and climbs steadily for 2 miles to the Butterfly trail. Take a Right on the Butterfly Trail for a steep 1.4 mile climb UP!
Directions: Take I-10 South to Grant Rd. Go Left on Grant Rd, Left on Tanque Verde Rd and then Left on the Catalina Hwy. At milepost 24.5, turn Right at the Fire Station on Control Road (dirt). There is a sign. Road conditions are variable and seasonal. Most of the time a high clearance 2-wheel drive vehicle has no problem. The trail head is located 2.8 miles from the Fire Station and about 100 yards after the metal gate. It is not well marked, with only a metal post. Park in a campsite on the opposite side of the road. No pass required. |
