On a private river trip, October 2019. Since I realized I had recorded a GPS route of this hike, and took photos, I thought I may as well post it here. I don't think many river runners walk very far up this canyon. I had never been up it before. I think most people stop at the first waterfall.

We do try to do some different hikes each trip. For this one, if you did a layover day, you could throw some gear in a backpack and do an overnight up in that canyon. You could go way further than I did. I didn't have much time, since I had to be back at the boats by a certain time, which of course, no one bothered paying any attention to. Gripe gripe.

I have kind of sworn off doing GC river trips, at least for awhile. I truly don't like the big group dynamic. I always end up being emotionally miserable at some level. I am not good at partying or late evening socializing. Heck, I didn't party even when I was young! They party and gab half the night. I go to my tent and read. I enjoy chatting, during the day, but at night I only want peace and quiet. I get sick of the sound of human voices, including my own.

My friends tell me I should put together a trip for 6 people or so. That might be okay, (or it might really suck, depending on the people.) 25 days is a long time, especially for me, to deal with folks. 2 rafts (two people each raft) and 2 kayaks might be okay, though. Of course, first I'd have to win that lottery again. I have won it 3 times. Not sure my luck can hold now, what with so many more people applying for it. The way I usually get on a trip is to be invited by friends.

In 2019 I went on TWO Grand Canyon river trips. Oh, bad, bad, bad! "You broke the law," they said. Hahaha, WRONG! On the April trip I went as an employee of AzRA. You can do an unlimited number of employee trips, PLUS one private. The October 2019 trip was a private. This year, 2020, I probably could have gotten on both kinds again, but I didn't try. I didn't want to go. I could say it was the Covid that stopped me from asking around to get on a trip, or applying for the lottery, but it wasn't so much that. I just didn't want to go.
