Hike #5 of 10 of our Spring 2014 Utah trip.
Last spring we were stumped on this hike by a large pour-off due to vague route information, and because it was the last of 4 hikes on the same day, we didn't have enough time to backtrack and try another route.
So.... this year I wasn't about to let this one slip through again. Pretty much all it took to get it right this trip was to stay up on the bare rock until AFTER the large pour-off. Then it was a matter of choice whether you stuck in the wash (which we did on the 'out' leg) or stay up longer on the bare rock (which we would on the return leg).
The route takes a long wide arc, first going SW from the trail head, then curving west and then northwest for the last .25 mile or so.
As you approach the walls with desert varnish you will want to stay up high as close as you can to the wall or you will miss the first petroglyphs. But of course the real deal here is the Procession Panel itself.
Depending on what your theory is, this long procession of people is either going into a large open circle (the earth?) or are coming out of it. If I recall correctly I believe I counted 140 individual characters horizontally to the right side of the circle, 17 vertically below it and another 13 horizontally on the left. There were some assorted other petroglyphs of various animals, some readily identifiable, others, who knows?
Unfortunately I spent so much time counting the figures then shooting video that I forgot I had not taken photos but a couple photos of the panel. Thankfully Tracey let me use a few of her photos to post.
Part of reason for my brain fade of missing the photos was that once I realized we were this far west on Comb Ridge I figured we could 'bag' Peak 5340, one of the prominent high points along Comb Ridge. I shot plenty of video on the climb but have yet to get that edited.
