For quite some time I'd been at the point of reaching fewer than 1/4 of the 300' prominence peaks in the Weavers Needle Quadrangle so I figured it was time to start knocking out a few. Being out this way on the JF/Hoolie Bacon/Peters Trail with Tracey a month ago it had reached the top of my list.

I left home shortly after 5 am to beat the Apache Trail traffic on 88, which I did with the exception of one slow truck pulling a boat. Thankfully he pulled off at Canyon Lake and I had clear sailing up to the Tortilla TH... the one just off 88 anyway.

The Cherokee made quick work of the rocky 'steps' and it wasn't long and I was at the beginning of the JF Trail. I followed JF until turning off onto the Hoolie Bacon Trail, which I followed until it turned west out of Tortilla Creek. I had planned on taking Hoolie Bacon all the way to the northwest end of Horse Ridge and following the ridge to Peak 4260, the southeastern terminus of Horse Ridge, but when what I thought was my destination was in plain sight straight ahead, well why not cut off the extra few miles instead. It worked out surprisingly well by following Tortilla Creek up Cedar Basin Canyon until it was time to ascend.

The slope didn't look too inviting from the creek, but as happens most of the time, close-up it was just a matter of one-step-at-a-time, changing the route only when there is no other choice. Partway up the slope I saw a deer pop its head up and look at me, but knowing my 4X zoom camera wouldn't do it justice I took my time getting it out. Even full zoom it's hard to make out. I did shoot a 20 second video but at full zoom trying to keep it in view meant the video wasn't worth posting.

While approaching what I thought was my destination I noticed the GPS said another .25 mile to go and sure enough, a look across a deep drainage there it was. Too steep to continue that direction I followed a game trail counter-clockwise around 'Peak 4213' and continued onto Horse Ridge then following it out to the summit of 4260 at the southeastern end.

I filmed most of the final ascent with my GoPro but decided to post just the summit panorama portion.

As usual for the return leg I followed a slightly different route, one which would have been easier if I had known earlier I was ascending the wrong peak. but if I had I would have missed the short deer encounter so I was ok with that.

from there is was simply a matter of following Tortilla Creek to the Hoolie Bacon trail and back to the TH. Although over 100° when I reached the TH I cast my eyes on another peak to bag, just .8 mile away. Although having used up 100 oz of one bladder, the second (70 oz) was still full so I figured I'm here, I might as well bag it, and emptied my pack of items not needed for such a short hike and took off... but that's for another trip log.

I posted 30 of the 52 photos from the hike on HAZ, as usual the rest are on my website.
