First day of an 11 day road trip to Mount Shasta, California and back. My first vacation in 9 years. The first day's travel was short, as we are attending a church event in Casa Grande tomorrow before we head west.

We left eastside Tucson about 2:30 pm after the last minute banking, shopping, business issues, and instructions for watchful neighbors. My wife and I headed north on AZ 77 (Oracle Road), then AZ 79, the Pinal Pioneer Parkway. We made the obligatory stop at the Tom Mix Memorial. Tom Mix was the rodeo performer and silent movie actor who made over 300 films. He died on this spot when he crashed through construction barriers at 80 mph at a wash where the bridge had washed out. He was 60 years old when he died.

My wife and I couldn't help but notice how lush this stretch of road looked. As we approached Florence, we turned towards Coolidge. The landscape flattens out, and with all the farm land, one could be in San Joaquin Valley area of California if you didn't know better.

We eventually wound our way to Casa Grande, pulling into the Best Western on Florence Blvd. Consulting Yelp, we settled on a Cuban restaurant - Feli's Cuban Kitchen in historic downtown. Yelp showed it having an average of 5 stars based on 25 reviews, and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere was lively and colorful, with Latin music playing, and the staff was very attentive and friendly. We stared with an appetizer of green fried plantains topped with sautéed shrimp in a creole sauce. For entrees, my wife had flounder topped with pineapple and mango, while I had "vaca frita", tri tip beef slow cooked then shredded and sautéed with onions, garlic, cumin, and a hint of citrus juice. All of it was simply delightful. Last, we had coconut flan, which helped to cut some of the garlic aftertaste down.

Sunday: a late afternoon and evening drive from here to Palm Desert.
