One of the more difficult and challenging hikes in Arizona!

Distance: Difficult (high exposure, scrambling, rout finding), 6 mile round trip

Elevation: Difficult (+3000 AEG)

Wilderness: Difficult (no water)

Weather: Sunny & hot

We camped at the Rim Base Camp on Friday night, then descended nearly 3000 feet to the Little Colorado River. Class III and IV scrambling conditions + advanced route finding. We then enjoyed ... some Willy Wonka Chocolate factory river. No blue water unfortunately. Still pretty though. We set up our base camp on the river bank and enjoyed the surroundings. Sunday we broke the camp and head back up.

It was very tough, even for experienced backpackers. The sun was beaming on us most of the trip down which caused some of us getting nauseous and had to rest in shade for a while, required water and food management, as well as good scrambling and water hiking skills. This hike is not for beginners or anybody with an aversion to exposure or heights, or if you have weak knees.
It is one hell of an exercise. I burned over 5000 calories on this trip.

We have met another group of backpackers that started the hike Friday morning (!!!) but finished just hours before us. Apparently they got lost and the trip took 17 hours for them (not sure how that's even possible).

The key for this hike is to be aware of the surroundings and pay attention to cairns. They will lead you in & out.

Also, our camp at the beach had to be evacuated in the middle of night as river level started suddenly rising several feet. Our way out also flooded and we had to bushwhack on Sunday early morning.

Not sure if I will ever go back, although I am interested to see the blue waters. Maybe in few months I will actually forget how much pain this trip was :?
