This is a great summer hike in Arizona -- Fossil Creek in Fossil Springs Wilderness. We hiked to the source of the springs, down to the magnificent waterfall and along the creek to check out other swimming holes and rock formations. From Fossil Springs Trailhead, we hiked Fossil Springs Trail to Flume Trail and stopped for swimming and lunch at the waterfall. We checked out some other water holes along the creek before returning the same way we hiked in.
**Important Note: A major caveat to this hike is that it is known in past years of having excessive numbers of people, garbage, trampled vegetation and other major problems from too many people. The U.S. Forest Service, however, reportedly has put in place measures to protect this Arizona gem. The main road from Strawberry is now closed to motor vehicles, some campsites have been closed, temporary toilets have been set up and garbage has been picked up. The Forest Service is also close to completing an extensive management plan that will protect the wilderness even more in the future.
• Elevation gain: 1,426 feet | 5,696 feet at trail head | 4,270 feet at Fossil Creek
• 3.75 miles one way from trailhead to waterfall |
