| partners | | We started with too slow of a pace to put this one in the w column. I still believe it can be done as a day hike but we’d need to either start hiking when we started driving or do it from the other side of the rim.
I met the boys at The Happy Place at 1am and we headed towards the canyon. The ride was entertaining as per usual and most of the conversations are classified or will be released under heavy redaction. The crew all had less than 3 hours sleep with Dave having the least with a whopping zero.
We arrived at the pay station and got the green light to go thru. Next I spent about 30 minutes eating breakfast and getting dressed. Joe left about 10 minutes before us. Did I mention it was in the 20’s at the start? Joe is a big wuss when it comes to cold and he was wearing shorts. 
The hike down SK was horrible at times as the cold multiplies the mule stench tenfold. We reached Phantom with negative attitudes and sat for a few minutes. The hike up to ribbon didn’t change our attitudes much. The initial climb up 300 ft felt ridiculous and the next 1,000 ft of steepness and scree and my bad attitude took over. We lunched at the Red Wall and did the math about the next mile and a quarter and aeg and decided to turn back. The weather was looking bad and played a small part in that decision.
The hike out separated the boys from the men and I was a child amongst giants and they slowed their pace so I could keep up.
The expensive burgers were great and came with fries and a large half pickle and enough onion to make a salad. The rosemary rolls were ok and helped stem the hunger pains.
It’s always a fun time hiking with Joey and Dave.
First hike of the year over 25 miles and most aeg I've done all year. It was only the 3rd hike all year over 20 miles. |
