I did this one counter-clockwise from the Spur Cross trailhead. Spur Cross trail, which turns into Trail #48, then made a left onto Trail #252. The first stretch of 252 is pretty much straight up heading towards Sugarloaf Mountain. Saw several people on the Spur Cross, not a soul on 252. The trail becomes a little hard to follow in some parts, a bit of trail finding skill will come in handy. Great views from up there of Skull Mesa, the Spur Cross valley and Elephant Mountain. Speaking of the trail getting hard to find, I completely lost it for a while a little past the big wood fence thing on the north side half way point, near the second spring. And then of course my phone died that I had been using for GPS. I knew where I was on the map, so I followed the wash west and then south for a bit until I caught up with the Elephant Mtn trail and then the Tortuga, which took me back to the start. So lesson learned, on a trail I've never done, bring an actual GPS, or a separate camera, and don't use the phone for both :P. I've hiked this area several times, just not this section, so it wasn't a big deal, just could've used some more cairns. Still a fantastic hike, perfect weather, slightly overcast, nice breeze. I expected to see more wildlife with the lack of people, but only saw a bird or two. There was water in the Limestone Spring, Cave Creek only had a few tiny pools here and there.
