After twisting an ankle during our way-longer-than-expected hike along Gun Creek, we decided to start heading home with the possibility of picking up a short hike somewhere between Gun Creek and Mesa.

After a few short drives along various Forest Roads on either side of AZ 88, we felt more like just heading straight home than taking on much of a hike. Until I remembered wanting to check out FR 1553, just south of Jakes Corner.

The reason I did was I have a peak on my to-do list which is a short distance across Tonto Creek from the end of FR 1553. so we drove to the end of the road on a bluff 150 above Tonto Creek. Whoops! No going to to cross the creek here.

So we drove back out to where the road crosses the wash of Hardt Creek and began our short hike from there. After the rough and rocky Gun Creek hike earlier, this was mostly hard-packed sand or smooth rock... nice!

We passed a few cows grazing along the creek as well as various pieces of old equipment. I wasn't sure what the first cast iron ring was for, but the next part appeared to be the flywheel and crankshaft of an old steam engine.

By now I was beginning to wonder... we are getting very close to Tonto Creek but are still at a much higher elevation than the creek, so something has to give. And it did... not much farther and we were stopped by a 50 foot drop.
:scared:
Ok, we're not going ahead so it's time to head back. So we wrapped up the hike and headed home. When we turned onto AZ 87 all we saw as far as the eye could see was large pickups pulling huge campers, toy-haulers, ATV trailers, and in one case a pickup pulling a toy-hauler pulling a boat. It appeared to be an endless train heading up north. Although Tracey has to work it made us glad to be spending the weekend back in town while everyone else is gone.

Spending two days in solitude was great!
