Beautiful oasis towns with lots of water thanks to the nearby Sacramento mountains, featuring acequias everywhere, and monster trees. When I am over in the Alamogordo area I always make my way up the mountain to the wonderful little town of Cloudcroft (about 9000 feet), but usually I go the standard way up highway 82. About 10 years ago, I decided to take the road out of La Luz to try and follow the route of the old Cloud Climbing Railroad. Shortly out of La Luz, turn right on the Fresnal Canyon Road, which more or less follows the railroad route up to the village of High Rolls. The Rails to Trails program has been adding to the trail system here over the years. It is now fairly complete all the way from La Luz to Cloudcroft. The last time I was here, the restoration of the trestle was just beginning, and the trail signs, etc. were not in place. It was nice to see the finished product! |
