So... shortly before sunset we drove along the Atlantic Ocean shore on Victoria Road until we found the perfect spot adjacent to Oudekraal Beach with the 'Twelve Apostles' on Table mountain behind us.
After the sunset we will drive past Lion's Head to Signal Hill in hopes of taking night photos over the Cape Town Waterfront. As we were passing Lion's Head we glanced back and saw the beginning of the phenomenon Table Mountain is famous for... the tablecloth spreading over the edge of the mountain. Too bad we didn't notice it a minute or two sooner as it was fast getting too dark for a good photo, but we took some nonetheless.
And now, again, being the end of a three-day holiday weekend, the traffic out to Signal Hill was grid-locked... of course we wouldn't realize that until the last corner before the long turn-around loop. It wouldn't have been that bad if not for some very timid drivers, unwilling to pass within inches of an oncoming vehicle... even at .5 mph. To get things moving toward us, I drove the rental car off the side of road... and promptly into a hole, scraping the front suspension along the edge of the pavement.
(don't worry, I got absolute TOTAL coverage on the rental)
As soon as the first car passed me, I backed up, dragging the suspension along the edge again until I could get it back on the road. The moment I did I took advantage of a tiny gap between cars to back into and quickly turn around. Then we promptly drove far enough back down the hill so as not to get caught up in a traffic jam again.
And guess what? Here's comes a 40' tour bus up the road. I feel sorry for everyone up that way now, for with all the cars parked illegally along the road, there simply isn't enough room for the bus to pass, let alone turn around. (The ONLY spot for buses to turn around is at the loop at the very end of the road.)
Ok, so I lied... I really didn't feel bad for them.
I simply put it out of my mind as we took a short stroll while taking a few photos before leaving.
