My Black Friday Plan A was to bag Peak 3235', smack dab in the middle of Hells Canyon Wilderness. I rolled up 20 minutes before sunrise to where I had planned to park and begin the off trail approach, only to find new signage forbidding such plans. I kept driving, looking for alternatives, and only found more new signs. Realizing the only 2 official access points would make for lousy approaches, I parked and watched the sunrise over Lake Pleasant instead.
On the drive back home I decided on Plan B, parking at the Walkin' Jim trail head. I headed out, leaving the trail and heading for the small cuesta on the north side of Cottonwood Creek. The route up was nice - big, stable boulders, and the top had some decent views of the area, as well as some nice chalcedony. Another slightly higher cuesta was now visible to the northwest, so I dropped down and crossed the wash that separated the two, spooking some cows in the process. The route both down and up was not great - baseballs and cantaloupes, and I ended up taking a spill as one shot out from under my foot. After bagging number two, I slowly headed down and joined Cottonwood for the return back to the truck.
I don't know if I'll ever return to bag 3235'. In the last 14 years I've done most of the accessible peaks in the area, and every time it gets to be more of a hassle. 3465' is perhaps the only one worth a return trip - a great peak with pavement to the trailhead, a trail almost to the top, and never ever Black Friday crowds.

It was tense.
