On my way down to pick up James and Olivia (aka Spiderlegs and Livi-Divvi), I could barely see the freeway message boards through the haze of wood smoke. I think they said something about it being a No Burn Day.
We arrived at the "trail head" right on time, did the intro thing, loaded up and headed up, enjoying perfect temps and zero snow this time. The route to the saddle had a few small sections of light brush, along with some medium steep loose ground, but otherwise straightforward and over in no time. From the saddle the boulders become larger and hands come into play, but no exposure and other than a handful of Cholla and Catclaw, the scramble was fairly pleasant. The summit ridge arrived, with great views and a 20-40 mph wind driving towards the very abrupt western cliff. After signing the register, we congregated below and away from the precipitous edge and broke out the bottles of Brut, Pam's home made oatmeal raisin cookies and chocolate-covered strawberries. :)
In the warming sun, we told stories and pointed at stuff, enjoying the summits ability to make any troubles below seem small. So many adventures could be seen from our vantage point, so many possible future memories.
Fortified, we began to head down. I went ahead to drop my pack at the saddle and bag 3048', a really nice scramble to a similar cliffy summit. I stayed on the east slope, and though steeper and rougher than Roblas proper, the rock was fairly solid and free of annoying flora.
After a quick pic, I headed down and rejoined the group. Soon we were at the vehicles, where we made another stab at the cookies and enjoyed some post hike brews.
Another successful New Years Day Hike - thanks again to Pam for putting it all together. Looking back at all 5, the list of attendees reads like a Who's Who of HAZ, from the Ultra Hikers to the newest of the new (welcome Livi-Divvi!)
HAZzy New Year everyone!
