| partners | | 8 of us took on Sierra. I invited Carl, who I had met through a friend on Facebook. He brought his friend from St. George. We ended up with a solid team of canyoneers.
We had heard through the Facebook Southwest Canyoneering group that one could go through Sierra without getting wet. So we left the recommended wetsuits and packraft in camp.
Each time we got to a drop we would peer down and see a pool. Each time I got nervous and regretted not bringing my wetsuit. No one wanted to get wet! It was cold and breezy in the canyon... So we'd spread out looking for alternatives. Can you hike around, downclimb, or find a different anchor? With our tenacity we were able to successfully navigate the rappels in the canyon without getting wet! One rappel in particular sticks out. We found a bush to rig off from and at the bottom Carl had to maneuver so that he would not swing back into the pool. He then used a second rope to pull all of us over to the side as we rappelled.
I hadn't read or brought all the beta, so we made the mistake thinking the canyon was done and took off all our gear just to find there was more to do.
I finally had to get wet but it was to avoid a running leap across a pool. With my shoulder already in pain I didn't want to do anything to make it worse. So I just stepped in. Mike on the other hand charged it and slipped and fell in. He managed to shove a small twig in his finger and get an imprint of his ascenders on his hip. He provided a lot of laughs for the rest of us as we rematches the videos of his foley.
Even with 8 of us we finished the canyon in good time. We had plenty of time to hang in camp and prepare an amazing potluck of pizza, tamales, salad, and broccoli! Then we proceeded to drink too much at the campfire |
