Although along the first 5 miles of the hike, many of the Cairns are clear, you still have to really pay attention or you may easily get off trail. If you do just look around you will eventually spot a Cairn. It is a hike that is beautiful, on various terrains, but you must really be up for the challenges of rock hopping/climbing, multiple creek crossings, many huge fallen trees, you must climb over, soft sliding dirt on very thin ledges, some that are cliffed out, catclaw through out the majority of the hike (wear hiking pants and a light long sleeve shirt). The only easy part of the hike is the first mile in and out. My favorite part were the all the creek crossings, there was lots of flowing water and small falls. I also enjoyed the parts that we did get some tree cover. We did miss the cabin, that would have been really cool to see. I really enjoyed all of the challenges but by the end of the hike was glad to not go through any more catclaw. We thoroughly enjoyed the hike but at mile 5.30 we had to turn back and complete it as an out and back.Even with a GPS it just shows you are off trail. Since we totally lost trail and we were not with anyone who had previously completed the loop due to the terrain being very slow moving and not having a headlamp on us, we did not want to chance it. (Our experience level as hikers: We have been hiking for many years and have done many advanced level hikes rim to rim to rim, Mt. Whitney, Ridgeline, Brown's Peak to name some of the more popular ones, but we have also completed many other challenging hikes within fast time frames.) We really enjoyed this hike, but would have loved to complete the full loop rather than doing the onb, we just didn't want to chance it. Our hike totaled 10.6 miles, 2200 ft of elevation within 5 hrs 17 min as an out and back on the South Fork Trail from the Deer Creek Trail-head. The full loop would have been about 13-14 miles 2900 ft according to the read descriptions. |
