I hiked the Hackberry Springs loop the previous week. My cousin who doesn't live far wanted to see in person what we hike the previous week so we agreed to go again. Its a relatively short loop.

From Apache Junction take Highway 88 East. Not far after passing Lost Dutchman State Park you will see a sign for First Water Trailhead (FS 78). A relatively smooth dirt road will take you to the trail head. I prefer to park at the Horse lot and walk the .25-.5 mile rd to the actual trail head. (This way when you hike up from the springs you don't have to walk the road back.)

Both times I hiked this route I took a GPS. The first time it measured 5.5 Miles and the second time it measured 5.2. Guess we did a little less exploring the second time around.

From the First water trail head continue to follow trail #236. You will pass two trail intersections which include #104 and #241. At the intersection of trail #236 and #241 look about 20 yards up the trail. You will see a trail that bears to the left. Take this trail and continue to Follow this trail through a flat grassy field. Continue to follow the trail which will begin to head in north western direction. After you leave the Garden valley still heading in a north west direction pay close attention to the trail. Its splits. You want to go around the back side of the mesa to allow a true loop through the springs. Once you go around the back look for the black streaks on the rocks. You can follow either of the two washes back to the intermittent rd. I prefer the one on the right side. A bit more scenic in my opinion. From the metal structure follow the trail up the hill and you will be back at the rd. (this is why I prefer to park at the horse lot.)

Enjoy
