It was my reintroduction to the Supes so Minkis picked a fairly easy route. The plan was to car camp in the area and then head out the next morning. We scrapped that and started up the trail from First Water TH at 10pm. A thunderstorm had just passed through so there was plenty of mud and toads were all over the trail. A juvenile white tail scampered across the trail about a mile in. We settled on Garden Valley for camp on night 1. Just before bed the ground came alive with spiders and scorpions which was kinda cool. The winds picked up and stayed throughout the night. In the a.m. we set out for Second Water and did some exploring up the creek bed which was dry aside from a few pools of rain water (which we used to cool off in). After lunch we decided to brave the mid-day heat and hike to Hackberry Spring. The spring itself is an interesting ecosystem of its own. Water dripping from the pipe had a sewage odor. The pool was full of algae, toads, colorful water bugs, tropical looking fish and even a snake cooling off in the water. Oh and tons of bees. Night 2 we camped at the Hackberry campsite amongst the millions of ants/anthills. Some rain passed through just before bed and cooled us off enough to be comfortable in our tents. In the a.m. Minkis had some stomach issues so we immediately started our hike back to the TH. A friend picked us with a cooler full of beer and some burritos that we enjoyed at Canyon Lake. Great finish to a nice couple days in the Supes. |
