| no partners | | I arrived later than anticipated in the Prescott area, and by the time I even decided what I was going to do for a hike / left for the TH, it was almost 6:30 PM. Talk about ‘winging things’, I didn’t even know how to get to the TH and simply headed across town toward the ‘P’ on the mountain while pulling up a route on HAZ. If only I remembered what Peter had told me about simply parking at Home Depot…
…instead, I used Route Scout’s topo to navigate through some neighborhoods nestled at the base of P Mountain, and hoped to find parking. After making a few wrong turns, I finally found parking on a dirt road, [Wells Fargo Rd], a few feet down and across from the turn to the Turley TH, [which is sandwiched right between two properties with fences; and, in combination with a gate, it looks more like a private drive]. It proved to be the road to the TH, and walking the short road didn’t add more than 3-5 minutes, luckily.
I started on the Turley Trail, which was contouring the base of some ridges that led toward the mountain, [but the trail was headed away from the Mountain]. I contemplated taking one of several routes leading up the ridge(s)… [but, given how active the bees have been and not having a whole lot of time before dark, I didn’t exactly jump at the opportunity to go off-trail]. However, after passing up 3 or 4 very well-beaten routes, temptation got the better of me and I found myself off-trail, heading up a ridge toward P Mountain.
A few times I crossed over the dirt road that leads to P Mountain but decided to stick with my ‘as the crow flies’, bushwhack approach. Visibility and maneuverability were both very good - excellent, and I was racing the setting sun. The summit views were very nice but it was a short visit… visibility was very good for a bushwhack, but I did not want to be bushwhacking after dark… watching my footing after dark AND watching for snakes would’ve been a bit much.
I looked at the topo and opted for a more *direct descent [*or at least one that would get the off-trail portion over with the fastest; hence the “road finish”]. I completed the bushwhack with just minutes to spare before needing a headlamp, and I was back at my vehicle shortly thereafter.
There are many other prominent points/peak, [including the highpoint], as well as many fun looking ridgelines that I will definitely be going back to explore. As extremely well routed as the area is, it will make for tons of off-trail fun. |
