We did this over two days (not wanting to overdo or anything) this weekend. We started at mile post 270 off the highway north of Pine, and headed northeast. There isn't much for trailhead parking--3-4 vehicles only--but we managed to pull in just as some others, with an unleashed dog that wanted to run out into weekend traffic, were leaving.

The trail goes through a small gate in the right-of-way fence (gotta find a way to get a super gate here, the Bear Foot logo will be awesome) and heads in the wrong direction for a few hundred yards on a two-track. Then it turns right where the trail crosses the two-track and begins the contour around along the rim. The gorgeous scenery to the south along the rim and then the east slope of the Mazatzals, Mt Ord and whatever the air quality will allow beyond that makes up for the powerline and highway noise. We were soon beyond both of these detractions and rolling along the smooth trail.

The trail was built by the Pine Strawberry Fuels Reduction group as part of their efforts to promote recreation in the area. They did an incredible job! It helps to have abundant materials for rock retaining walls and paving stones for erosion-prone areas. It dips in and out of areas semi-cleared as a fire break around Pine, allowing for both expansive views and beautiful close-in forest scenes.

Our first day was ~4.5 miles between the highway and the north end of Pine where we had a vehicle, and then from there to the new bridge on Pine Creek, and back, the second day.

Our second day we found the trail continued much the same as the first, through the more open fire break area, where some monster dead fall have come down, and been cleared. As we approached the bridge however the forest changed to uncut mixed-species-mixed-age forest, very tall and dense and serene. Absolutely beautiful.

The bridge is quite the structure. It is made of fiberglass beams that were hauled in by hand from just north of the girl scout camp and assembled onsite. PSFR bought it and volunteers installed it. Wish we had been there to help.

From there back to the vehicle. Pretty tame hiking, but it was the holiday weekend.
