| no partners | | Of all the rim canyons I've previously explored, I had never ventured down any of the three Leonards. And for as nice as Knoll Lake is, it does tend to gather a crowd sometimes, so I decided to do a little exploring earlier in the day to let everybody else have time to leave.
It got borderline warm, but the hiking was interesting. Lots of water, green meadows, and variety. Not the most scenic of the canyons up here, but pretty cool nonetheless. I saw one elk, but it didn't stick around long enough to fill out the adoption paperwork I had with me. Also came within about 20 yards of a huge red-tailed hawk that was in the creek, before it flew away quite majestically.
Cut my route short instead of connecting the two canyons in a loop and headed back to camp for a mountain-breeze-assisted pine-shade nap. Perfect. On the way home, I stopped at a viewpoint or two and hit up the Promontory tower at sunset. No reason to rush back to the heat at home! |
