I’ll do my best to keep the venting to a minimum, but I ain’t gonna sugarcoat this: it was a disappointing weekend. As such, I’ve summarized all three hikes into a single triplog to get it over with, and the corresponding stats are for everything combined. Of the three hikes I did, just one of the GPS tracks turned out somewhat respectable, so that is the one I’ve posted with this triplog; it’s a loop hike that involves a sweet bushwhack + ridgeline traverse to Marshall Peak.

Saturday – if I were to have posted Saturday’s adventure as its own triplog, the title would’ve been something along the lines of ‘Catalina B**ch-slap Bifecta;’ and it’s more than just a catchy title. Truth be told, the plan was a badpumpkin trifecta of ~20 miles & 5,000+ AEG, [very similar in stats to the SWEET adventure I pulled off in the Bradshaws earlier this year]. Frustratingly, the failure to have re-attained a particular heath/fitness parameter, [which was very much in order back when I brought home gold in the Bradshaws earlier this year], cost me from experiencing the epic type of adventure I’m accustomed to this past weekend in the Catalinas. In addition to bagging only two of the three of the named summits on the itinerary, I also bypassed several fun-looking UN peaks… totally NOT my style and a sure sign that I’m off my game. Had bypassing the sweet UN peaks & failing to bag summit #3 been the result of something like threatening weather, leg/muscle soreness, miscalculating the amount of water I needed to complete the adventure, etc., then it wouldn’t have been more than a mild frustration at the worst… but because the reason was directly related to my failure to re-attain the fitness/health parameter I’ve been busting pumpkin, day-in/day-out to re-attain… well, it was a total b**ch-slap.

Sunday – physically and emotionally drained on many levels, I managed to hit up only two of nine points of interest, logging less than 6.5 miles / under 1,500’ AEG in the process. The second point of interest [Marshall Peak] proved to be a really fun bushwhack & ridgeline traverse… but coming in at under 4.5 miles / barely over 1,000’ AEG, it wasn’t exactly a productive option for what should have been a full-day’s worth of hiking. All things considered, I suppose 6+ miles is better than nothing… and luckily, [despite the fact that my three-day average did not even hit double digit mileage], having opted for the Catalinas over one of the many other further away ranges on my radar meant that the weekend was not a wasted investment, [i.e. my hiking mileage/time on the trails still came out ahead relative to the driving mileage/time to get there/back].

If the huge disappointment I experienced this past weekend proves to give me the edge I need to reach my goals, then every bit of it will prove totally worth it. Only time will tell how things play out.
