| partners | | I wanted to get another bushwhack in before the end of the year before the Bighorn Sheep off-trail restrictions go into effect. Alamo Canyon has long intrigued me with its giant towering domes. There are two domes, 1000 foot Leviathan Dome and above it, Wilderness Dome, that have climbing routes to the top.
Bill and I took the trail behind the bench on the birding trail, then a short route to connect with another well-worn trail that took us to a nice multi-tiered waterfall. We stayed on canyon right on a cairned route that stayed well above the creekbed until we got a ways into the canyon.
Our cairned route looked like it was heading up toward Buster Mountain, so we picked our way down to the creek by some giant striped granite chunks. We were pleased to find that we hit a great spot in the creek with running water, oaks and a touch of fall color.
There were many small cascades in the creekbed, but farther upstream the water disappeared entirely. It surfaced and went underground intermittently in the canyon. There were great views of the summit of Table Mountain and the domes along the way.
We reached a lunch spot with running water and some flat areas that would make a beautiful camp. Content with our explorations for the day, we rock-hopped back down the creek. I would like to come back and camp so that I have more time to explore all the way to the domes. The Catalinas never cease to amaze me- so many spectacular places. |
