The hike up is short, but probably a bit more strenuous than some of the newbies and kiddos that came along anticipated. No biggie; everyone did great. We drove down early from Truckee in order to secure a parking spot. There is parking at the trailhead itself, or also about 1/4 mi. up the road (to the north) at the Emerald Bay state park TH. We parked at EB parking area, as we intended to go down to the beach after our hike. Cost for parking at EB is $10. I think it is a bit less at the Eagle Lake TH ($5?), and there is some "free" parking along the road, but it's a very popular area, and I noted on our return that the highway patrol was writing out tickets for those parked outside of designated parking areas.
Anyway, on to the hike .... It's easy to see why this is one of the most popular hikes around the lake. After a short climb, you cross the bridge over Eagle Falls. Very beautiful. The trail then continues on and up through the forest till you get to the eastern edge of Eagle Lake.
As we headed out early, we had the lake to ourselves when we arrived. Beautiful little alpine lake.
I had done some internet research and knew that there was some good climbing/rappelling cliffs on the far side of the lake. So, we had brought our gear. While the kids played around in the lake, I scouted out the rappelling spot and set up the lines.
The rappel spot was great--120' or so on a good granite face. Several of the family members had never rappelled before, and all had a great time doing so, with views of the mountain and Eagle Lake in the background.
Good times. |
