It's been awhile since we hit up Picacho Peak, so we decided to make it the destination for our post-Thanksgiving hike on Friday. We were not alone .... Lots of folks out on the trail today. We realized as we were driving down that REI had teamed up with the State Parks to offer free entry passes as part of its #optoutside marketing effort. I'm sure that contributed to the crowds.

Even though it was pretty busy on the trail, we still had a good time. After summiting, I ventured out to the western hump before heading back down. Nice views of the final cable sections of the trail from that side, as well as an overlook down to the cross-over saddle.

They bill this as a 4 mile hike, but even with my jaunt to the western hump, I only got up to 3.2. Maybe it's because there is so much up and down and not much horizontal travel that the GPS has a hard time calculating accurate distance. Or, maybe the park service is just being generous with the mileage ... :-k

Stopped at DQ afterwards for dipped cones. I even got cherry b/c I've seen JJ3 recommend it so often here. I give it an "okay" rating, but company made it great.

Since we were in the vicinity and had never been there before, we dropped by Casa Grande Ruins National Monument on the way back. Interesting place. It's right next to Coolidge, rather than Casa Grande, though .... I assume because Casa Grande (the city) had already nabbed the name before Coolidge sprung up(?)
