The hike heads north on Saddle mountain Trail to Sheep creek Trail just before dropping into McFarland Canyon. Once in McFarland canyon take the Thicket Spring Trail to the Junction of East fork #260 and old Cornucopia Trail. My GPS indicated the Arizona Trail took the Old Cornucopia Trail, while the Signs indicated that it Took the East Fork #260 Trail. I was confused so I took both for away then turned around. will have to finish this portion of the AZT from the north at Peeley Mountain once I figure out what is going on. (retrospective, The AZT takes the East fork #260 to Thicket Spring on the new Cornucopia Trail, This is the new route. The AZT use to take what was then the Cornucopia Trail to Thicket spring, this trail was abandoned, although it is still signed)
Water along this trail was scarce, even in McFarland Creek. I would of expected being December things would be running, but then it was a dry fall. The West Fork Sycamore creek that Forest Service Road 25 crosses on the way to the trail head was also dry so that should have been an indication. (I was up at Peeley Peak trail head in March of 2000 and hiked to Thicket Spring area and all creeks were running good) |
