| partners | | Two things caught my interest when Bruce suggested this hike. First checking out the new section of AZT out of Washington Park and second checking out the Battle of Big Dry Wash Monument. However we were unsure of the exact part of the AZT that was rerouted and went up the old section from Washington Park. Once we hit the rim checked out General Springs Cabin and start of AZT #27. At this point we still didn’t know where the new AZT reroute was but we would find out later.
We continued on AZT until the turn off trail down General Springs Canyon. Nice canyon with some minor brush but we decided to exit early to save time. Then headed over to the Battlefield monument to check out that area. Pretty well constructed monument and cool to see.
After that we hiked back over to the AZT and headed back southbound to Fred Haught junction were we turned off the trail earlier. This section of trail is especially fast being mostly flat and a stroll through the pines so we made it back to the top of rim rather quickly.
Heading down we were still unsure where the AZT reroute was but as we continued downhill Bruce noticed an unmarked trail heading off the old AZT. We had missed it on the way up the trail and this time followed it back. The trail winds through the woods and crosses the creek several times so more scenic than the old road AZT. It does add a bit of mileage but the scenery makes up for that. Being new there is no signage at the junctions yet but it’s not that difficult to find if your paying attention |
