| no partners | | I needed a leg stretcher in the cool air. I also wanted to check out a few areas I'd not been to before.
I started in the Potato Lake area. I got there early before the busy Labor Day weekend boating traffic showed up. It is a cute little lake that was glass-like when I got there.
Next, I headed for the Dry Lake area, going cross country cross country and using FR's. Dry Lake was not dry, but it's nothing I'd filter from either. Next, a fun, pretty, steepish downhill to the Kinder spring area. In the middle of this open meadow area, was a metal catchment, with some beautifully cool, clear, clean water. Probably piped from Kinder Spring.
On the way to get into East Clear Creek, I stopped at Sherman Tank. I expected something impressive with a name like that, but it was anything but.
I jumped into East Clear Creek at Jones Crossing. Some of the easiest Rim canyon walking I've done. Two miles of mostly well worn game trails until I climbed out, up a canyon that was mostly clear, then up to McCarthy Ridge. I Ran into a hunter scouting for turkey and deer.
The next part was my only concern on what I'd drawn up. I had to drop back down into East Clear Creek and the Topo lines were tight. The first 200' down were not bad, but then I got cliffed out. So I followed a well used game trail that lead me safely, albeit steeply, to the canyon floor. Those elk always know the way. Looking back up to what I'd just come down, I never would have picked that as an UP route.
Another 6ish miles in East Clear Creek on mostly easy walking, until the canyon closed up and I jumped out.
There was an interesting cave area that I checked out also during this section.
I didn't expect to have the rim to myself. There were quite a few people/campers enjoying the long weekend. When I was off the forest roads, I saw no one.
Saw 11 elk in 2 groups.
I also saw a squirrel with cheeks so full of nuts, that he almost tripped on them while running.
