| no partners | | Having departed Chama, NM and on my way home, I kept seeing signs pointing to Window Rock. I had read bits and pieces about the area so I decided to take a scenic detour and visit the place.
It was a beautiful, albeit short, drive from NM 491 up and over the mountain to AZ 191, from there just following the road south past those exciting sandstone cliffs and unusually shaped rock formations was a real treat for my tired eyes. I kept following the signs and my GPS until I was on the grounds of the Navajo Indian College, then drove around until I was on the Memorial Grounds. Window Rock is part of a memorial to the WW ll Navajo "Code Talkers" and does not appear to offer any hiking around the immediate area. Unmarked trails do exist but, at the time, I was unaware of them.
The Memorial Park is very well done and maintained and I spent several minutes walking around, reading some of the plaques and taking some photos of the large hole in the rock. This is a kinda nice place to visit if you should already find yourself in the vicinity, but it's a long drive for the limited access to the surrounding area. Access to any of the local areas is severely limited and posted as this is Navajo tribal lands.
