| no partners | | Our section crew hiked from Mt Peeley to Mormon Grove TH's today. Thanks to Guru for the drop-off service or we might still be navigating FR201. It's been a little too long since the crew has been hiking, but this short day trip was a good re-introduction. The work done 2-3 years ago on this segment is holding up quite well; some brushing is due and we'll work on mustering some volunteers to address that.
What needs to be addressed also is the ?(*&%$)(# that dropped a load of supplies at the foot of the junction sign in McFarland Canyon. Six cans of tuna and nine of Spaghettios!!! And a gallon of water to boot. I'm at a loss to come up with any rational explanation for this. It'll take the bears about 60 seconds to figure out how to open these, then God help the next poor soul who tries to camp in this beautiful spot. McFarland Canyon is about 4.5 miles from either Mt Peeley TH or Mormon Grove, do you really need a cache here? If so, how about hanging it in a tree, or burying it? No one cares to see your shopping bag here in the (designated) Wilderness. This ain't how it's done, people!
We wondered if this foolishness was connected to the bike tracks we saw between McFarland and Mormon Grove, 4+ miles of Wilderness trail.
Some people just shouldn't get off pavement!
Other than that, a good day on the AZT! |

Thicket Spring |
Quart per minute |
Quart per minute |
| | You have to look for it, but there's flowing water at the spring. As you approach (southbound) the area where the spring is marked on the map, there's a cairn at the switchback, spring is a few minutes bushwack to the west. Not clearly evident--you gotta look for it, but there was water there. Maybe someone will put up a sign.
12/5/17 Water still flowing in the drainage 150 feet west of the cairn and now sign. Follow the cleared path to the drainage and look either way. Someone did put up a sign https://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=679852
