| no partners | | I went up onto Cooks Mesa to do some recon, and to locate a traverse station. The Mesa is west of FR 24 and the 51 Ranch.
Cooks Mesa is huge, and at one time, it must have been full of cattle. There are tanks spread out all over the vast mesa, but not many signs of any cattle now. I had the entire mesa to myself, however the Forest Service (or whomever) has been up here recently, setting up fence lines along portions of Cooks Mesa’s ridgeline. The fence building appears to be a ‘work in progress’.
I was able to slowly drive up onto the mesa, to start my hike to the traverse station. The road up is a ‘cut’ in the side of a mesa high point named Blackjack Point. The road starts off OK, then gets a bit nasty, then gets OK again. A high clearance, 4-wheel drive vehicle is advisable. Once on the mesa, the road is a 2 or 3 mph crawl for the 1/2 mile I used of it.
Hiking on the mesa was very easy, with few obstacles and very little AEG. (Heck, it’s a mesa). The east side has a nice ridgeline, and that’s where the only scenic views are found.
I located the electronic traverse station, ET 3 JEK. The disk looks brand new, and actually is only 52 years old. Of the five in this ‘ET’ series, I’ve located 4 of them, with only one more to go. I have to figure out a route to the last one.
Again, Cooks Mesa is vast, but not particularly scenic. There are a few roads up there, but no trails that I noticed. Moving around the mesa is so easy, I should have brought my running shoes, as I could have jogged to the little traverse station disk. |
