I drove west, and a bit south, to hike up Peak 2249, which is located just west of the Eagletail Mtns Wilderness, and just east of the Ranegras Plain.

Counting the azimuth mark that was set in the flat desert, I located a total of five Fish.
I’m assuming there was a rancher or miner nearby with that name, or possibly one of the surveyors had a bad meal the night before they surveyed this mountain. :o
I’ll guarantee, the disks weren’t named ‘Fish’ due to an abundance of water around the area.

I located the Fish Azimuth Mark while going to the mountain. It turned out to be at the second location I searched. I had to do a bit of backtracking, and the 1949 surveyors helped out by erecting a big cairn near the disk.
I could see the huge cairn 300 feet away, and then easily located the azimuth disk eighteen feet away from the cairn.
Check out my GPS track, and you’ll clearly see my GPS generated azimuth line location.

Going up the basalt rocks on the mountainside, to the benchmark area, was uneventful.
There’s actually two ‘Fish’ benchmarks up there. One benchmark is a normal little BM disk. The other BM is a huge cairn. The cairn has its own, separate BM datasheet, and has its Height of Light still in place.

The surveyors must have been musclemen, as some of the boulders they used for the 1949 benchmark cairn are larger than a microwave.

A lot of Pk 2249’s top is flat, so I explored south, prior to using a drainage to get back to the very expansive, open desert.

I like this area, and already have a few other mountain peaks picked out to explore.
I just have to locate a Jeep that gets 50 mpg, and I’ll be all set.
