Here's an interesting contrast in wildflower status between Picacho Peak State Park and Lost Dutchman State Park. I was at Picacho Peak on Sunday and I'll say wildflowers are on the wane there, but today at Lost Dutchman State Park the wildflowers are just starting to take flight.
Reminds me of Picacho Peak 2 weeks ago when Mexican Poppies were a thick carpet and the number of Brittlebush blooms could be counted on one hand. Today at Lost Dutchman, the poppies were making a thick carpet at the lower elevations that thinned out to isolated pockets towards the Siphon Draw slick rock basin. Only saw 2 Brittlebush flowering. Plenty of Lupine, Blue Ralphie's Red Ryder, Fiddleheads, and Desert Chicory blooms. Even saw the recently identified "African Daisy"http://hikearizona.com/dexcoder.php?dex=1&PID=862 along the Apache Trail and some of the roadside drainage within Lost Dutchman State Park...
I did this hike today with Lynn and Skippy. Beautiful day without much trail traffic. I see that Siphon Draw Trail has a separate hike listing so it no longer has to be logged as a partial Flatiron hike. I think I have enough material to do the write-up...
Know Joe wants this submitted as a one-way trail segment, but for the record today;
1. Parking at the Siphon Draw day-use TH (elevation 2080 ft)
2. Discovery Trail connector is 0.5 miles long.
3. Siphon Draw Trail #53 to slick rock basin is 2.0 miles long (elevation 3100 ft).
Round trip is 5.0 miles with 1020 ft elevation gain... |
