This was a picture taking trip more than a hike... or as a hiker I meant along the way said, "the journey was more important than the destination". I am a journey hiker although I do like reaching the destination most of the time. I didn't start the hike until 1:45 as I prefer the afternoon sun for taking pictures. Needless to say, it was a bit toasty but fortunately there was a slight breeze. I did notice a lot more than I had on previous hikes up the Draw before the granite (is that really granite?).
I did this hike quite a few times in 2004 but haven't done it since 12-26-2004. We usually made it up and out of the Draw to the tier you hit before going back down and east to the Flat Iron. My brothers and I have wanted to tackle the Flat Iron since then but I'm thinking it just may not happen as the physicality with this hike is pretty grueling; almost more so coming down (people were slipping all over the place) than going up.
The brittle bush have bloomed most solidly on the southwest side going up. However, there is plenty of bloom yet to occur with the brittle bush the rest of the way up. There were bits of blooming globe mallow but I think next weekend may be much better; especially if it stays this warm.
There were lots of poppies and lupine blooming along the trail as well as the chupurosa (with red blooms). People traffic was probably at the medium level.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
