My wife Lynn and I went up to Flagstaff today to visit our eldest daughter Hannah and her new dog "Pauli". With this being Pauli's first hike, we decided to take Pauli to one of our favorite spots on Hart Prairie - the Michelbach Ranch.
When we turned onto FR151 and headed towards the west spur road closure just beyond Mile Marker 3, the only person we saw was the local Forest Ranger. At the TH we got a friendly wave from a couple who'd set up camp there. The camp fire cooking sure smelled good creating some sudden growling from my stomach...
Our first destination was the climb up the unnamed volcanic crater to soak up one of our favorite views of the San Francisco Peaks. We skirted past some patches of snow and ambled our way towards the Michelbach Ranch House ruins. From there we headed up towards the Potato House ruins.
After exploring the ruins, we headed across the open field towards the southeast until we came to a fence line and a well defined trail on the opposite side of the fence. We headed in a general northeast direction towards a tank full of water (complete with Mallard ducks!). Saw patches of wildflowers with an unidentified small white flowering ground cover only 1/2 inch tall. Iris and sneezeweed starting to sprout providing the odd patch of green in the mostly brown soil cover...
We entered the aspen forest and soon popped out onto FR151 near a corral just south of the west spur road trail head.
Guess the next hike with Pauli will be with our Springer Spaniel "Skippy"... |
