On my second day in the Huachuca Mountains I wanted to do the Miller Canyon Trail to the Crest Trail but since the inside right knee was bothering me I opted to do some shorter hikes not so far from the vehicle in case it really got bad. I may just have to let this heal instead of going hiking when it starts to feel better. I went with the lower Miller Canyon Trail which starts about 1.5 miles below the Miller Canyon Trail Head. I do not believe this is part of the Miller Canyon Trail #106, but it is a logical extension of it. I have seen some references to this trail as the Powerline Trail. This was a pleasant walk along Miller creek which was running fairly good (probably less than normal for spring). The trail head for the lower Miller Canyon Trail starts where the Perimeter Trail comes in from Carr Canyon, about 1 mile in on Miller Canyon Road. This is one leg of a trail system that will take you from Carr Canyon across Miller Canyon and end up in Hunter Canyon. The connecting trails are the Perimeter Trail, Lower Miller Canyon Trail, a short portion of the Miller Canyon Trail #106 and ending with the Hunter Trail. While the Lower Miller and Hunter trails are interesting I’m not so sure the Perimeter Trail would be, Sounds a lot like the Lost Goldmine Trail in the Superstitions; a lot of walking (3.7 miles) in and out of ravines as you cross from one canyon to another. The Lower Miller Canyon Trail is more of what I would call a nature trail and if you are in the area and want to do a short early morning or early evening hike this would be a good option. Really don’t need to throw a pack on, heck you could probably do it in flip flops. Bring a camera and if you are in to watching the predecessors to the dinosaurs bring binoculars.
